History of Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is celebrated every year from December 26 through New Year's Day by African-Americans to commemorate their African heritage, while reinforcing values passed from generations to generations.
Kwanzaa means "first fruits of harvest." This festival ends on New Year's Eve in a glorious feast called "KARAMU." Specialty foods are served with coconut as a main ingredient.
The center of the celebration is the table that is set with a fruit and vegetable bowls called "MAZAO" placed in the center with a straw mat called "MKEKA", a community cup called: "KIKOMBE CHA UMOJA" and a seven branch candelabra called "KINARA" with black, red and green candles called "MISHUMAA SABA".
