History of Saint Patrick's Day
Saint Patrick's day is celebrated every year on March 17 in the commemoration of Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick was born in Wales about 385 AD. His given name then was Maewin and was considered a pagan. At the age of 16 he was captured and sold as a slave. He escaped from slavery after 6 years of captivity and went to France then known as "Gaul".
In "Gaul" he lived in a monastery where he became a priest and changed his name to Patrick. He devoted his life to convert pagans and later return to Ireland where he established churches and monasteries to aid him to convert the Irish country to Christianity.
The symbol of Saint Patrick's Day is called the "shamrock", which is a green three-leafed clover.
